The importance of good nutrition

The BBC have released a report about the effects of malnutrition in the UK. Malnutrition is causing thousands of hospital admissions every year and more than 2,000 cases of patients with malnutrition were recorded by over 40 hospital trusts in a single year.

Although the figures in the report are not broken down by age of the patients, Age UK has expressed concern about malnutrition in older people.

Home Instead Senior Care supports the view of Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK who said, "In a civilised society people should not be suffering from malnutrition - these figures are shocking.

"Health professionals and those in social care need to get better at spotting the signs and then making sure that a suitable care plan is put in place to ensure those at risk of malnutrition do not slip through the gaps between services and get consistent treatment and support.”

At Home Instead Senior Care, we are dedicated to providing the highest-quality care for older people in the comfort of their own homes, offering a wide range of one-to-one services tailor made to the needs of the individual. These services include shopping and meal preparation, and perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to sit down at the table and eat with someone over a home cooked meal.

Older and elderly adults who are struggling to maintain a healthy and balanced diet may find they could benefit from some guidance and support, and that is where Home Instead can help. Our dedicated caregivers can take their clients to the shops to purchase healthy food, and can also help to prepare meals that are nutritious and enjoyable.

David Dunn, Director of Home Instead Senior Care Solihull says, “Our homecare service assures the health and wellbeing of clients and brings piece of mind to their families. All too often, older people skip meals or do not have a balanced diet. With regular care visits our CAREGivers are on the lookout for signs of poor eating habits and can ensure that the fridge and cupboards are well stocked and, in many instances, ensure that our clients do not eat alone.”
