The Yorkshire Man of Steel sculpture and visitor centre will be situated on the edge of Rotherham by the M1 motorway. It will be made from stainless steel standing 30 metres high. That is half as big again as the Angel of the North.
It honours the men and women of industry in our own town and the wider Yorkshire region. Home Instead Senior Care Rotherham has been pleased to obtain special permission from its creator Steve Mehdi to post pictures here. Once built, and most of the funding has now been raised, the project will be run as a charity.
Meantime there is great excitement about the Heart of Steel aspect of the project as Home Instead Rotherham owner David Coldrick explains:
'The two metre Heart of Steel is proving to be of great interest to Home Instead Rotherham clients, families and staff - especially those with a connection to the coal and steel industries as it will become an integral part of the sculpture.'
'The Heart of Steel will have up to 150,000 names of people engraved on it who have made a modest set contribution to fund raising. It is frequently being used as a means of both remembering a loved one or of welcoming grandchildren or great grandchildren into the local community.'
'It is clear that many of the millions of people passing the Yorkshire Man of Steel, or visiting it, each year will be able to make a direct link with names on the Heart of Steel. We are proud of our industry and of our town and region. This is a bold statement of continued confidence in the community and like Home Instead it says 'we care'
'I think the Yorkshire Man of Steel is going to be of unique importance to some of the Home Instead family here in Rotherham. It will also support older people with a steel and coal heritage to improve reminiscence and make more connections across the generations.'
