Cancer Care at Home in Monmouth, Abergavenny & Pontypool
Practical, compassionate home care for people living with cancer across Monmouthshire – during treatment, recovery and beyond.

A cancer diagnosis rearranges everything at once. There are appointments to get to, often a long way from home. There are new medicines, and side effects that make ordinary things a shower, a meal, the stairs suddenly exhausting. And there is a family trying to hold down work and children while quietly becoming carers overnight.
Home Instead Monmouth, Abergavenny and Pontypool provides practical, compassionate home care for people living with cancer across Monmouthshire. Led locally by Karen and Laura Clatworthy, rated 9.6/10 on homecare.co.uk and named one of the Top 20 home care providers in Wales, our team supports families during treatment, through recovery, and for as long afterwards as help is wanted.
Where we fit alongside the medical team
We are not nurses, and we do not replace the oncology team, the GP or the district nurses. What we cover is everything in between the appointments the long days and difficult nights at home when someone is tired, unwell, or simply needs company. We work alongside your loved one’s wider team, including clinical nurse specialists and charity support such as Macmillan where it is involved.
Support during treatment
Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy affect everyone differently, but fatigue, nausea, poor appetite and increased infection risk are common to most. Our Care Professionals help by:
- Taking the weight of daily tasks help with washing, dressing and personal care on the days when there is nothing left in the tank.
- Making food manageable small, appealing meals and plenty of fluids, built around what your loved one can actually face rather than what they ought to eat.
- Keeping the home clean and safe light housekeeping and fresh bedding, which matter more than usual when the immune system is suppressed.
- Medication reminders so anti-sickness and pain relief are taken on schedule rather than when someone remembers.
- Getting to appointments and sitting with them through the waiting, which is often the longest part of the day.
- Noticing changes a Care Professional who visits regularly spots the things a weekly phone call does not.
The travel problem in Monmouthshire
Treatment rarely happens around the corner here. Depending on the treatment, appointments may mean Nevill Hall, the Grange University Hospital, or a specialist centre further afield in Cardiff or Bristol. For someone living rurally, that can mean an early start, a long journey, hours of treatment, and a long journey back repeated every few weeks.
Our Care Professionals can be at the house before your loved one leaves, or waiting when they get back. For families scattered across the country, knowing someone will be there on treatment day takes an enormous weight off.
Recovering at home after surgery
Cancer surgery often means coming home with something new to manage. Alongside everyday personal care and mobility support, we can help with stoma care following the guidance of the stoma nurse, catheter care, support with wound hygiene and dressings as directed by the nursing team, and keeping an eye on temperature and general wellbeing so changes are picked up early.
If discharge is being discussed, call us early rather than on the day our guide on getting home from hospital explains why the first fortnight matters most.
Knowing when to call for help
Anyone having chemotherapy is given a 24-hour helpline number by their hospital team, to be used immediately if they develop a high temperature or suddenly feel unwell. Our Care Professionals make sure that number is somewhere obvious and that it gets used promptly, rather than someone deciding to see how they feel in the morning.
Company, as well as care
Cancer is isolating in a way that is hard to describe to anyone who has not had it. Friends sometimes go quiet because they do not know what to say. Days at home are long. Often the most valuable part of a visit is simply that someone is there to talk, or to sit quietly without needing anything.
On better days, a visit might mean a short walk, a coffee in Monmouth or Abergavenny, or a drive out somewhere familiar. Keeping hold of ordinary life, even in small pieces, does real good.
Support for the family
Families caring through cancer put themselves last for months at a stretch. We can provide regular visits so you can keep working, respite for family carers so you get a proper day off, or overnight support so you can sleep knowing someone is awake. Our guide on looking after yourself covers what else is available, including your right to a carer’s assessment.
If things change
For many people, treatment leads to recovery. For others, the focus eventually turns towards comfort and quality of life. Either way, care can adapt including palliative and end-of-life care at home, usually with the same Care Professionals your loved one already knows. That continuity, at that point, is worth a great deal.
