Growing Smiles: Celebrating Our 2026 Sunflower Competition Winner in Epping

Home Instead Epping celebrates Brian, winner of its 2026 sunflower growing competition, and the joy of gardening and meaningful activities in later life.

A little sunshine, some patience and plenty of care have produced a wonderful result for one Home Instead Epping client. We’re delighted to announce that Brian is the overall winner of our 2026 Sunflower Growing Competition!

What began as a simple springtime activity has brought months of enjoyment, friendly competition and conversation for clients and Care Professionals across our local community.

From a Small Seed to Something Special

Earlier this spring, Home Instead Epping invited clients to take part in a sunflower growing competition, delivering potted sunflower seeds and an information leaflet explaining how to get involved.

The idea was simple: give clients something enjoyable to nurture, watch grow and feel proud of throughout the warmer months.

There were three categories to enter:

  • Tallest Sunflower: Who could grow the most impressive height?
  • Biggest Flower Head: Which sunflower would produce the largest bloom?
  • Most Unusual Planting Spot: Who could find the most creative place for their sunflower?

Throughout the competition, our Care Professionals encouraged participants, helped where needed and captured photographs showing the sunflowers at different stages of growth.

It was wonderful to see the care, enthusiasm and determination that everyone brought to the challenge.

Congratulations to Brian, Our 2026 Winner!

Of course, every sunflower has its moment in the sun, but this year’s overall winner was Brian, whose magnificent sunflower earned him the top spot.

Pictured proudly displaying his achievement, Brian has every reason to smile. His impressive result represents weeks of patience and dedication, from tending a young plant to seeing it reach its full potential.

We’re thrilled to recognise Brian’s success and hope his winning sunflower will inspire even more entries next year.

Why Gardening Is Such a Rewarding Activity in Later Life

Gardening offers much more than beautiful flowers. For older people, caring for plants can provide a gentle, enjoyable way to remain active, maintain familiar interests and experience a sense of achievement.

The Royal Horticultural Society highlights the positive relationship between gardening and physical and mental wellbeing.

Even a small gardening project can bring several benefits:

– A sense of purpose: Having something to water, tend and check on creates a rewarding routine.

– Gentle activity: Planting, watering and caring for flowers can encourage movement at a comfortable pace.

– Conversation and connection: Sharing updates and comparing progress gives people something to talk about.

– Personal achievement: Watching something grow through your own efforts can be enormously satisfying.

Importantly, gardening can be adapted to different abilities. A sunny windowsill, raised planter or small pot can provide just as much enjoyment as a large garden.

Making Everyday Activities Meaningful

At Home Instead Epping, we know that wellbeing is about more than meeting practical needs. Continuing to enjoy hobbies, interests and everyday pleasures is an important part of living well at home.

Our sunflower competition is a lovely example of how shared activities can help build meaningful connections between clients and Care Professionals.

Through our companionship care in Epping, we encourage older people to continue enjoying the activities that matter to them, whether that’s gardening, creative hobbies, getting out into the community or simply having someone to share their interests with.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s sunflower competition and to our wonderful Care Professionals for their encouragement and support.

Congratulations once again to Brian! We look forward to seeing what everyone grows next year.
