Home care matters. But so does everything that happens outside the four walls of home. Across Monmouth, Abergavenny, Pontypool and the surrounding villages, some of the most powerful things we do at Home Instead don’t happen inside anyone’s living room – they happen at community tables, in village halls, at seated sports sessions and in the marquees of the Monmouth Show. Because for older people, especially those living with dementia, staying connected to the wider community is one of the single most protective things for both wellbeing and independence.

Rated 9.6/10 on homecare.co.uk and named a Top 20 Home Care Provider in Wales, our mother-daughter led team – Karen and Laura Clatworthy – have built a genuine community programme around our care service. Here’s a look at what’s on, why it matters, and how you or a loved one can join in.

Why community connection matters so much in later life

Loneliness and social isolation are two of the biggest, quietest health risks facing older adults in Wales. Research consistently links them to higher rates of depression, faster cognitive decline, reduced appetite and increased hospital admissions. For someone living with dementia, isolation can accelerate confusion and shrink daily life in ways that are very hard to reverse.

The good news? Even small, regular community moments – a monthly café, a weekly seated sports session, a trip to a familiar local event – can push back against that. They give the week a shape. They offer something to look forward to. They put people in rooms with other people who understand. And for family carers, they offer a much-needed pocket of warm, sociable time.

Our monthly Memory Cafés in Usk and Monmouth

Our Memory Cafés are the beating heart of our community programme. Held monthly in Usk and Monmouth, they’re open to anyone – people living with dementia, their family carers, older adults who’d simply like a bit of company, and anyone curious about what we do.

A typical Memory Café morning includes:

  • Tea, coffee, cake and a warm welcome
  • Live music, singalongs and gentle entertainment
  • Chair-based activities and reminiscence games
  • A chance for family carers to sit down, breathe out, and chat with others who really get it
  • Information and signposting to local dementia support services
  • Visits from local partners and guest speakers

There’s no pressure to “join in” and no expectations – people come as they are, stay as long as they want, and leave with a bit of extra light in their day. Many of our regulars now count the days between one café and the next.

Seated sports and gentle exercise sessions

Physical activity in later life doesn’t need to mean the gym. It can mean throwing a soft ball, kicking a beach ball across a circle of chairs, or playing a friendly game of seated skittles – all while laughing with people around you.

Our seated sports sessions are designed for older adults of every ability. They’re adapted for people with limited mobility, and they’re equally welcoming for those living with dementia, Parkinson’s or recovering from a stroke. Benefits people notice quickly include:

  • Better balance, coordination and joint mobility
  • Improved mood – exercise is one of the most effective natural mood-lifters we have
  • New friendships built up naturally through regular attendance
  • A confidence boost that spills over into daily life at home

A wider programme of community events

Beyond our regular Memory Cafés and seated sports, we run and participate in a much wider programme of community activity throughout the year. This includes:

  • The Monmouth Show – a highlight of the local calendar, where we host a stand and welcome hundreds of local families each year.
  • Agricultural shows across Monmouthshire – a great chance for older adults from rural areas to enjoy a familiar, cherished day out with proper support if needed.
  • Alzheimer’s Society partnership events – as a national partner of the Alzheimer’s Society, we support fundraisers, awareness campaigns and Memory Walks throughout the year.
  • Seasonal celebrations – from Christmas gatherings to summer garden parties, where our clients, families and Care Professionals come together.
  • Talks and workshops – on topics like understanding dementia, preventing falls, and navigating the care system in Wales.

How our care service and community programme work together

For many of our clients, community events aren’t a nice extra – they’re woven right into the care plan. A Care Professional may accompany a client to a Memory Café, drive them to a seated sports session, or spend a companionship visit at a local coffee morning together. That way, someone who might otherwise struggle to get out gets to keep going out, in a way that feels safe and unhurried.

This approach is a big part of why our clients tell us they feel less isolated after starting care with us, not more. Home care done well opens the world up again – it doesn’t close it down.

Support for family carers, too

Around one in ten adults in Monmouthshire are caring for a loved one. Our community events aren’t just for the person being cared for – they’re a lifeline for family carers too. At a Memory Café, you’ll find people who genuinely understand what your week has looked like. You can share tips, share a laugh, or simply sit in warm company without needing to explain a thing. Many of our strongest friendships in the branch have started around a Memory Café table.

How to get involved

Our community events are free, welcoming and open to all – you don’t need to be a Home Instead client to come along. Whether you’re thinking about care for a loved one, supporting someone at the start of a dementia journey, or simply looking for a friendly place to spend a couple of hours a month, we’d love to see you.
