"My job is absolutley 100% worthwhile"
I'm Helena Tym and I'm 58 yrs old (just!).
I heard about Home Instead via a post on Facebook & thought it might be something I could turn my hand to. I have been a CAREGiver for over year.
A typical day - greeting my clients, helping them wash or shower & dress. I then make that vital ‘first cuppa’ & prepare breakfast, followed by a bit of help around the house, supervise with medication. All this is done whilst chatting to my clients. I sometimes do their weekly shop & take them to appointments or to social outings.
I love the whole care aspect of my job. I love my clients, with whom I’ve built wonderful relationships, I enjoy knowing that they have had company for at least 1 hour of each day. I love hearing the stories they tell.
Enabling my clients to remain in their own homes safely & with confidence makes my job absolutely 100% worthwhile.
I was looking for something I could do, within the care environment that was flexible but still giving me a stable work life.
I was given in-house training on first aid, dementia, moving & handling, administering medication, laws & safeguarding.
I would highly recommend this job - I personally love it - it is fulfilling, rewarding, great fun & hopefully meaningful to my clients.
In the past, workwise, I have been a secretary, a childminder, a care-worker in adults with learning & physical difficulties. I ran the South Bucks Headway Day Centre as Manager, I am a mother which is more than a full-time job! I have loved all of my jobs & moving through the range of ages & abilities has been both a pleasure & an education. It has helped me enormously with my own family & day to day life.
The only skills you need are patience, the ability to care, truly care and to be flexible.
There are many memorable moments but being hugged & thanked for the job I do by a 95 year old lady who I’ve simply taken to the doctor is more than enough reward for me.
A fun fact about myself - I love drawing & design my own cards. I’m also a secret disco dancer when no one is watching!
