It was a double celebration for one man from South Birmingham when he reached his 100th birthday and celebrated his 73rd ‘Platinum' wedding anniversary. Les and his wife Edith, who is 96, were guests of honour at a special celebration organised by local care-at-home company, Home Instead Senior Care who support the couple to enable them to continue living together in their own home.
Les received his birthday telegram from the Queen and says that the secret for a long and happy life is a positive, successful marriage! He's enjoyed a long retirement following a varied career, starting out as a watchmaker before moving to the Post Office and then Britannic Assurance, finally retiring at the amazing age of 75.
Edith joked: "I am so grateful that Les and I have what most would only dream about, but I was so used to not having him around, and now I can't get rid of him! It's been a wonderful 73 years and I wouldn't change him for the world. We are looking forward to many more years and anniversaries to come!"
Terry Cheung, owner of Home Instead, Edgbaston said:
"Les and Edith are a fantastic, young-at-heart couple. Edith does such a lot but our CAREGivers provide some help so she can have a well-earned break from time to time. Les is amazing for his 100 years, always smiling and he has a terrific sense of humour."
