Growing old can bring challenges, both for the person who’s ageing and for their family. It can be frustrating for our loved ones because they can’t do everything they used to and feel like they’re losing their independence. At the same time, it might be worrying for their family as they might not be able to be there whenever their loved ones need them.

Well done to our amazing key players and CAREGivers giving up their Saturday evening to take part in the 5K Glow walk Southend on 7th March 2020. We came together to help fund vital research by joining thousands of walkers and unite against dementia. We raised over £150 from the office team and an update will be released once we have gathered a total from everyone else who has been fundraising in the team. The route started from Southchurch Park and the walk after dark with hundreds of people wearing glowsticks walked along the seafront up to the Casino. The idea of the glow theme is to ‘shine the light on dementia’. It was lovely to see so many people of all ages, suitable for families, wheelchairs and dogs welcomed, fundraising to change the lives affected by dementia. Thank you to everyone who has taken part in Glow Southend and hope to participate in next year’s event to raise event more for the amazing charity!
We were so upset to hear Bob who was about to turn 112 was having all birthday celebrations cancelled due to COVID-19. Therefore all CAREGivers, their children and grand children all wanted to do something for him and decided as a team to make some birthday cards, which we could send over via email to his care home. After spending a day organising this and tracking down the home where Bob lives, we managed to get in contact with Brendon Care Home just in time for his Birthday. We then discovered he was going to be on Good Morning Breakfast with Piers Morgan the next day this made it even more real and was going to be great to see him on the TV. The management were going to show him these cards after his busy morning of broadcast on ITV and the BBC. They kindly took a photo for us of him holding the print out of all his lovely cards our CAREGivers and their children/grandchildren had made for him. Some of the children wrote: “Happy 112th Birthday. I am sorry that you cannot have your party. I hope you have a lovely da. Love from Sophie aged 6”. “Happy 112th Birthday. You are amazing! I hope you have the best day ever, lots of love from Mille!” We wanted to show Bob we was all thinking of him and hope we have made his day a little bit brighter Bob ????

Our campaign #YouCanCare highlights stories of just how amazing it is to work in care. The rewards of a caring role are far reaching, and you can make a world of difference to the life of an older person, helping them to stay at home for longer. No two days are ever the same when you’re a CAREGiver. From helping to start someone’s day the right way with their favourite porridge and support getting dressed, to taking them out to catch up with friends at the local coffee morning, it’s full of variety. And experience isn’t essential, we’re looking for the right people with a kind heart and we’ll provide the award-winning training you need.
