Free Community Awareness Sessions in Romford: Helping Our Community Age Well

Discover how Home Instead Romford, Hornchurch, Rainham and Dagenham is helping local people feel informed, confident and connected through free community awareness sessions.
Building a community where people feel safe, supported and understood is an important part of helping everyone age well. At Home Instead Romford, we believe that sharing knowledge can make a real difference – whether that means helping someone recognise the signs of dementia, supporting a child who is worried about a grandparent, or giving older adults the confidence to protect themselves from scams.
That is why we offer a range of free awareness sessions for local community groups, organisations, schools and other groups across Romford and the surrounding areas. Each session lasts approximately 45–60 minutes, with plenty of time for questions, discussion and sharing experiences.
Here are just some of the sessions we offer:

Dementia Awareness: Understanding and Supporting People Living with Dementia
Dementia affects many individuals, families and communities, yet there are still misconceptions about what it means to live with the condition. Greater awareness can help people feel more confident about recognising potential symptoms, seeking advice and offering the right support.
Our Dementia Awareness sessions help participants understand what dementia is, how it can affect a person’s memory, communication, behaviour and everyday life, and why recognising possible symptoms early is important.
We also explore practical ways to support someone living with dementia. Small adjustments, such as speaking clearly, being patient, offering reassurance and allowing someone more time to respond, can help people feel respected and included.
It is important to remember that dementia is not a natural part of ageing. If someone is experiencing persistent memory problems or other changes that affect daily life, they should be encouraged to speak to their GP.

Child-Friendly Dementia Awareness: Helping Children Understand Dementia
When a grandparent, family member or someone close to a child develops dementia, it can be difficult for them to understand why that person is changing. They may notice that their loved one repeats questions, forgets familiar information or behaves differently, without understanding the reason.
Our Child-Friendly Dementia Awareness sessions help them develop a better understanding of dementia in an age-appropriate, reassuring way.
This is particularly valuable for families looking for guidance on explaining dementia to grandchildren. Open, honest conversations can help children feel included and reassured, while giving them the opportunity to ask questions and express their feelings.
We believe that helping children understand dementia from an early age is an important step towards creating a more dementia-friendly community for future generations.

Scam Awareness: Helping Older Adults Stay Safe
Scams can affect anyone, but fraudsters may target people they believe are vulnerable or easier to deceive. Older adults and seniors can face particular risks from scam phone calls, fraudulent emails, suspicious text messages, doorstep scams and online fraud.
Knowing what to look out for can help people feel more confident and recognise when something does not seem right.

Basic Life Support Awareness: Learning Skills That Could Save a Life
Knowing how to respond in an emergency can make a vital difference. However, many people feel unsure about what to do if someone suddenly collapses, begins choking or appears to be experiencing a heart attack.
Our Basic Life Support Awareness sessions introduce participants to important emergency situations and the actions that may help while waiting for professional medical assistance.
Find out more: The British Heart Foundation’s guide to CPR explains how to perform hands-only CPR, while its guide to heart attacks and cardiac arrest explains the difference between these emergencies.
Please note: These awareness sessions provide information and guidance; they should not be assumed to replace an accredited first-aid qualification or practical training where this is required.
