From IT to Care, Siobhan’s Career Change Story
After 30 years in IT, Siobhan became a Care Professional with Home Instead Reigate & Tandridge. Her story shows how life experience can find a new home in care.

From IT to Care, and Finding More Human Work
Siobhan didn’t come to care by the obvious route.
For more than 30 years, she worked in IT after studying computer science in Cape Town. She built a successful career working with finance and logistics systems, training teams, supporting clients and solving problems across Europe.
She enjoyed much of it, especially the people side. Sitting with someone, listening properly, working out what they needed and finding a way forward suited her.
But after decades of deadlines, long weekends and the pressure of always being the person expected to fix things, Siobhan felt ready to step off what she calls “that fast moving train”.
She still wanted to work. Just differently.
Looking for Something Local and Meaningful
Siobhan wanted part-time work, close to home, where she could use her experience but also spend her days with people.
Care was not completely unfamiliar. She had lived next door to her elderly parents for 13 years and understood how important good support can be. People need care, dignity, attention and kindness, and they need it done properly.
When she found Home Instead, the local reputation and positive reviews stood out. Then, after speaking to Dawn (HR Manager), she was struck by the difference in approach.
Visits were not rushed half-hour calls, but proper visits with time to do things well.
That mattered.
Skills That Travel With You
Although IT and care may seem worlds apart, Siobhan has found that many of her skills have travelled with her.
Years in IT taught her to listen carefully, notice details, ask the right questions, document clearly and share information properly. Those things matter just as much in care.
She has also appreciated the Home Instead app, which keeps visit notes, tasks and updates flowing between Care Professionals, the office, clients and families. Coming from an IT background, she knows how easily information can get lost.
Starting With Support
Siobhan began gently, with e-learning, two days of practical training and then a gradual start with clients.
Her first visit was companionship and support with a walk, which felt like a lovely introduction to care. Lorraine (Senior Care Professional) became her mentor, someone she could call or message whenever she needed guidance or reassurance.
She has also valued the support from the wider team, including informal tips and reassurance from more experienced Care Professionals.
Those small moments of support make a big difference when you are new.
Care Is in the Details
Siobhan has quickly understood that good care often sits in the details.
It is in the way you ask permission. The way you offer suggestions rather than instructions. The way you notice when something has changed and pass it on.
For Siobhan, the role suits someone kind, practical and observant. Someone who can listen. Someone who understands that dignity matters, whether you are helping with personal care, making notes, or simply giving someone enough time.
Moving from IT to care might sound like a dramatic change. For Siobhan, the thread running through both is people.
Only now, instead of a software system, the focus is a person in their own home, wanting to feel safe, respected and not rushed.
And that feels like a very good use of a lifetime’s experience.
