Health and Complex Care at Home in Newport, Cwmbran & Chepstow
Catheter care, stoma care, simple wound care and health monitoring at home in Newport, Cwmbran and Chepstow, from trained Care Professionals.

When a loved one comes home with a catheter, a new stoma, or a wound that needs watching, families often assume that’s the point where home care stops and a nursing home begins. In most cases, it isn’t. With the right training and the right support from the district nursing team, a great deal of health-related care can be provided safely at home — by people your loved one already knows.
At Home Instead Newport, Cwmbran and Chepstow, health and complex care sits alongside our everyday home care. Founded in 2017 by Karen Clatworthy and led today alongside her daughter Laura, we’re rated 9.9/10 on homecare.co.uk with more than 60 five-star reviews, and have been named one of the Top 20 home care providers in Wales multiple years running.
What health and complex care covers
Alongside personal care, our trained Care Professionals can support with:
- Catheter care — keeping the catheter and surrounding area clean and comfortable, emptying and changing bags, and watching for signs of infection or blockage.
- Stoma care — supporting someone with a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy, following the guidance of their stoma nurse.
- Simple wound care — supporting wound hygiene and dressings as directed by the nursing team, and flagging anything that looks like it’s not healing as it should.
- Vital signs monitoring — helping keep an eye on temperature and other observations, and recording them so changes are spotted early.
- Diabetes monitoring — supporting blood glucose checks, mealtime routines and foot care awareness, in line with the care plan.
- Nail care — routine cosmetic nail care, which is often neglected and makes a real difference to comfort.
Where our role begins and ends
It’s worth being clear about this, because families often ask. Our Care Professionals are not nurses. Clinical tasks — inserting a catheter, assessing and dressing a complex wound, changing the care plan — remain with the district nursing team and your loved one’s GP.
What we do is the day-to-day support around that: the daily routine, the observation, the hygiene, the recording, and the early warning when something changes. Every task we take on is written into the care plan, agreed with your loved one and their healthcare team, and only carried out by Care Professionals trained for it. Our Registered Care Manager, Nesta Bishop, oversees every plan, and home care in Wales is regulated by Care Inspectorate Wales.
Why familiar faces matter even more with complex care
Health-related care is personal in a way that takes trust. Nobody wants a different stranger dealing with their stoma bag three times a week. Wherever possible, we send the same small team to each client, and every visit lasts a minimum of one hour — so there’s time to do things carefully, properly and without embarrassment.
Consistency has a practical benefit too. A Care Professional who sees your loved one regularly notices the small changes: output that looks different, a wound that’s weeping more than yesterday, a temperature that’s crept up, someone who’s quieter than usual. That early notice is often what prevents a hospital admission.
After a hospital stay
Many families come to us at the point of discharge — from the Grange University Hospital, the Royal Gwent, Chepstow Community Hospital or elsewhere. Coming home with new health needs is daunting, and the first fortnight matters most. We can help plan support around the discharge date, work from the discharge letter, and provide more intensive support at the start that tapers as confidence returns.
Working alongside the wider team
We work with district nurses, GPs, stoma and continence nurses, diabetes specialist nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Our Care Professionals follow their instructions day to day and raise concerns promptly rather than waiting to see how things go. Families are kept in the loop, which for anyone living at a distance is often the thing that lets them sleep at night.
