Dementia Care in Ipswich, Woodbridge, Felixstowe, Hadleigh & Manningtree: Support That Makes a Difference

When someone is living with dementia, it can affect many aspects of everyday life, not just for the person diagnosed but for their family and friends, too. Finding the right support can make a real difference, helping people feel more confident, stay connected to the things they enjoy and continue living life in a way that feels familiar to them.

At Home Instead Ipswich, Woodbridge & Felixstowe, we understand that dementia affects everyone differently. That’s why we believe good dementia care starts with getting to know the person, understanding their life and recognising what matters most to them.

Understanding the person behind the dementia

Dementia care is about so much more than helping with everyday tasks. It’s about understanding someone’s routines, interests, experiences and the little things that make them who they are.

For one person, that might mean enjoying a favourite walk, listening to music or spending time in the garden. For another, it could be having a friendly face to talk to, sharing memories over a cup of tea or simply knowing that someone is there when they need a little reassurance.

Our Care Professionals take the time to build relationships with the people they support. By getting to know each person’s preferences, personality and needs, we can provide care that feels personal, familiar and comfortable.

We also understand how important consistency can be. Familiar faces and established routines can help people feel more at ease, giving families greater peace of mind that their loved one is being supported by someone who knows them.

Supporting our team to provide the best dementia care

Providing good dementia care takes understanding, patience and the right knowledge. That’s why training and ongoing learning are an important part of how we support our team.

Our Care Professionals receive City & Guilds Assured dementia training to help them better understand how dementia can affect someone’s everyday life, communicate effectively and recognise that changes in behaviour or mood can sometimes be a way of expressing an unmet need. This knowledge helps them adapt their approach to each individual, providing reassurance and support in a way that feels right for that person.

We also believe dementia awareness should extend beyond the people providing care in someone’s home. Our office team receives dementia training too. In fact, a high percentage of our office team joined us as Care Professionals themselves, so they understand first-hand what it means to support someone living with dementia. Having that experience helps us understand the challenges families may face and the importance of providing the right support at the right time.

Whether a family is just beginning to explore care options, needs advice as circumstances change or wants to discuss additional support, we want them to feel comfortable speaking to us and confident that they will be listened to by a team that understands.

For us, it’s about more than completing training. It’s about putting that understanding into practice every day, making sure the people we support and their families feel understood, respected and reassured.

Bringing people together in our local community

Supporting people living with dementia doesn’t stop at the front door. We know how important it is for people and their families to feel part of their community, have opportunities to socialise and know where to turn for support.

That’s why we’re proud to provide a range of dementia-friendly groups and activities across our local area, including our Memory Lane Groups and Key to Care sessions with 4  local GP surgeries, dementia cafés and community pop-up events with other local organisations. These are an important part of how we support people living with dementia and their families, helping them stay connected, meet others and feel part of their local community.

These sessions provide opportunities for people to come together in a welcoming environment, enjoy conversation and activities, and spend time with others who may understand some of the challenges they are experiencing.

For family members and carers, they can also be a valuable opportunity to meet others, share experiences and find out more about the support available locally.

We know that taking the first step and attending a group or event can sometimes feel daunting, particularly if you’re unsure what to expect. Our aim is to help people feel welcome and comfortable, with opportunities to find out more at their own pace.

Supporting families as well as individuals

When someone you love is living with dementia, it can be difficult to know what to do for the best. Families may have questions about safety, daily routines, changes in behaviour or when it might be time to introduce some extra help.

It’s important to remember that you don’t have to wait until things become overwhelming before asking for support.

Care at home can be introduced gradually, depending on someone’s needs. This might begin with companionship and help with everyday activities, before developing into more regular support as circumstances change.

Just as importantly, having someone you trust supporting your loved one can give family members some breathing space, knowing that they don’t have to manage everything alone.

Every family is different, and we believe the right support should reflect that.
