Opening the Doors for the Next Generation

Creating opportunities for young people

Work experience

Work experience is more than just a week spent in the office; it’s a chance for young people to develop their confidence, find new passions, and get a true grasp of the working world. At Home Instead Broadstairs, Ramsgate & Margate we’re proud to play a part in shaping these early experiences by providing meaningful placements that give the next generation hands‑on opportunities to learn, contribute, and grow.

Over recent months, we’ve welcomed a number of young people into our office, with each one bringing their own enthusiasm and interests. In addition to helping our team, their time with us has served as a reminder of the value of investing in the future generation.

Supporting Young People Through Real-World Experience

One of our recent work-experience students, Kylie, joined us from a local school to help with leaflet folding — a simple but crucial task that maintains our community engagement. As the child of one of our employees, Kylie’s introduction to our office workplace was also a reflection of our commitment to supporting working parents. Giving their children the opportunity to get involved not only builds their confidence but also teaches them the importance of team work and responsibility.

For many young people, these early experiences further help shape their understanding of workplace expectations and gives them a lasting sense of achievement.

Building Skills Behind the Scenes

We also had the pleasure of welcoming Ethan, who spent the week with us helping with compliance and administrative tasks. He was able to learn all about how we maintain high standards of care behind the scenes as well as valuable insight into the operational side of Home Instead.

These tasks may seem small, but they form the backbone of our outstanding service. Ethan’s attention to detail and willingness to learn made a huge difference in our workflow. More importantly, he left with a clearer understanding of how professional environments operate — knowledge that will support him as he continues his education and future carer planning.

Empowering Students to Make a Community Impact

We further welcomed Jack, a student from a local college who took on a much larger project: updating our What’s On Where Guide for older adults in Thanet. This guide is an important resource for our community, helping the ageing population stay connected with local clubs, activities, and social opportunities.

Jack approached the project with maturity and creativity, ensuring the guide was accessible and engaging. His contributions will be used by hundreds of older adults across Thanet, a significant achievement for any young person entering the world of work.

Why Work Experience Matters

At Home Instead Broadstairs, Ramsgate & Margate, offering work experience opportunities for young people isn’t just about giving them tasks, it’s about helping them discover their strengths, understand workspace culture, and build confidence in their abilities. Early exposure to professional environments can:

  • Improve communication and teamwork skills
  • Increase motivation and clarity in career
  • Build resilience and independence
  • Strengthen networking abilities

For us, it’s also an opportunity to give back. By opening our doors, we help nurture local talent and show young people that they have a place in the future of our community.
