Jill has experienced first hand problems when adults become unable to manage on their own. ‘My grandfather had dementia and was unable to manage by himself, at the time there were no support services available to enable him to stay at home. He was admitted to a residential home where he passed away soon after. I am convinced, had there been a service to help him in his own home with domestic activities such as shopping and cooking and his personal care, while keeping his independence, he would have remained happy at home and ultimately lived longer.'
Jill’s sister takes care of adults with Learning Difficulties and this also made Bryn & Jill aware of the similarities between adults with Learning Difficulties and older people who are less able than they once were. It was also apparent that there are lots of families who can feel there is not enough of the right type of support. Often loved ones just need a little respite so they can have a little time for themselves after which they are able to resume family life feeling refreshed.
