Stuart’s new career takes off

Former British Airways aircraft engineer, Stuart Havill, has one piece of advice for people thinking of changing their career to the care sector – take the plunge!

The 58-year-old is enjoying every minute of his new-found role as a Caregiver with Home Instead Senior Care in Bournemouth and is urging other like-minded people to follow suit.

He is finding that many of the skills acquired during his high-flying career in the aviation industry are providing the nuts and bolts he needs for his new role in the care sector.

Stuart was looking for a job after taking early retirement and redundancy from a long and illustrious career spanning nearly 40 years with British Airways at Heathrow Airport.

He has always had a caring nature, looking after members of his family and neighbours all his life and seized the opportunity to train as a Caregiver with Home Instead, one of the UK’s leading at-home care providers.

Stuart said: “I was impressed by the Home Instead ethos and their approach to care. Many people may think that you must have care experience to become a Caregiver however Home Instead obviously values life experience just as much.”

“If you have cared for other people and your family you have developed many of the skills needed as a Caregiver. You meet such a diverse range of people which makes the job so interesting.”

And he is finding that his former career in the aviation industry has added a new dimension to his Caregiver role, with many clients wanting to hear about his time at British Airways, which began in the 1960s.

Stuart worked on a range of aircraft from Concorde to 747s and Tristar and following in his father’s footsteps by opting for a career in the aviation industry.

“Home Instead tries to match Caregivers with clients sharing similar interests,” said Stuart, who enjoys gardening in his spare time. “It’s so wonderful knowing that you have helped put the spark back into your client’s life.”
