Christmas Past & Present: A Brunch That Brought Generations Together

Some events stay with you long after the last cup of tea has been poured — and our Christmas Past & Present Brunch at Braintree District Museum was definitely one of those.

Community Event organised by Home Instead Braintree at Braintree District Museum

On 11 December, we welcomed older members of the Braintree community and surrounding areas to Braintree District Museum for a special brunch filled with conversation, laughter and the warmth that comes from people gathering with open hearts. Created especially for those aged 65 and over, the event offered a relaxed and welcoming space to connect, reminisce and enjoy each other’s company — particularly important at a time of year that can feel lonely for some.

The event was officially opened by the Chair of Braintree District Council, who spent time chatting with guests and exploring the vintage games we had on display. From familiar childhood favourites to games that sparked memories of Christmases gone by, it didn’t take long before stories began flowing — “We used to play this every Christmas afternoon…” and “I remember having one just like this.”

One of the most beautiful moments of the day came when children from White Court School joined us. They sang festive songs for our older guests, but it didn’t stop there. After the singing, the children sat down, played games, chatted and laughed alongside the older generation. Watching friendships form across decades was incredibly moving — a reminder that connection doesn’t need age boundaries.

And then there was the unexpected guest. A lady walking past the museum stopped to ask what was happening. One of our Home Instead team members invited her in, found her a seat and made her a cup of tea. As she settled in, she quietly shared that it was her birthday — her 80th — and that she’d been spending it alone. Within moments, the whole room joined together to sing Happy Birthday. There were smiles, a few tears, and a lot of love. It was one of those moments that perfectly captured why days like this matter so much.

Our What’s on Where (WOW) Guide — featuring over 90 clubs and activities available each month for older residents across the Braintree district — was warmly received. Many attendees were keen to discover new ways to stay socially connected within their community, with a number of the activities listed being completely free.

There were plenty of other joyful touches too. A furry visitor arrived dressed head-to-paw in a festive outfit, much to everyone’s delight. One of our own clients came dressed as Santa — a role he once proudly played for children years ago.

By the end of the brunch, more than 60 people — volunteers, children and older members of the community were dancing and singing together to The Twelve Days of Christmas.

It was a powerful reminder that community doesn’t need to be complicated. Sometimes, all it takes is an open door, a kind invitation, and a willingness to make space for one another.

This event was lovingly organised by Grainne Sheehy from Home Instead Braintree, alongside Emma Armstrong from T.E.A. Training, with support from many wonderful volunteers. It was a true team effort — and one we’re incredibly proud of.

Christmas Past & Present wasn’t just a brunch. It was a reminder that everyone deserves to feel seen, included and celebrated — especially at this time of year.

And honestly? We’re still smiling about it.
