Tips on ageing gracefully

We all know the importance of lifestyle choices, such as eating well and exercising regularly. However, seniors can make other choices that can improve health and wellbeing.

Here are some tips on ageing gracefully.

Look after your Mental Health: Maintaining a positive outlook can be helpful when ageing. Keeping in touch regularly with friends and family is a good way of preventing loneliness. Using computer technology such as Skype, Facetime or social media can make this easier. Doing activities you enjoy can also keep you busy. Consider going to a coffee morning, joining a book club or becoming a volunteer for a local organisation, which are all ways of enriching your life.

Do brain-training: Your brain performs better when you challenge it more.  Brain Training can improve your problem solving, attention span and cognitive function. Learning a new skill, playing brain games such as crosswords and sudoku, or starting a new hobby are all good ways to keep your brain active.

Sleep: Try to aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. This ensures you recover from each day and reduces your risk of physical and mental health problems.

Limit your less healthy habits: Habits such as smoking, drinking alcohol and caffeine can catch up with you as you age, causing dehydration, but also impacting on your overall health. Stopping smoking, limiting your intake of alcohol and caffeine can lead to health benefits, and leave your skin looking better.

Wear sunscreen: Excess sun exposure can cause wrinkles as well as cancer. Always wearing sunscreen when outdoors will protect your skin and help prevent it aging.

As we age, all parts of our bodies are affected, but we can age well by adopting some simple habits.
