About Home Instead South Devon
A very warm and heartfelt welcome to Home Instead South Devon.
We are here to help you and your family through what can be a very emotional time.
At Home Instead South Devon we are committed to reducing the stress that inevitably comes with looking after an elderly loved-one in their own homes, when they are not able to do so themselves. We want to give you the peace of mind that the person you care about can lead a dignified and rewarding life, in their own home.
I’m Peter Hughes and I own the business with my wife, Mercedes. Home Instead South Devon came about because of our own personal experiences.
My academic background is in natural sciences and I have been lucky enough to have travelled the world working with large industries on projects to manage and protect the environment. Mercedes is a local Pharmacist with many years’ experience working in both hospital and the community. It was during her time as a Clinical Pharmacist on the Care of the Elderly ward at Torbay hospital that she was exposed to the difficulties that sons and daughters face when their elderly parents suddenly become dependent on them – especially if they have their own children to look after, jobs to maintain or even long distances to travel in order to visit.
It was only when we found ourselves in this same situation that we really appreciated how difficult it was to find the right care. We both have very elderly parents, on opposite sides of the country, who needed help but wanted to maintain their independence. Going into nursing homes is just not what they wanted. Traditional care services were able to provide some relief but were not able to cover all of the aspects. Importantly there was never enough time to ‘get the jobs done’ and to allow them to feel fulfilled, listened to and happy in their own homes. The confusion of multiple carers and unreliability of the visit times, all added to the worry for us all.
After extensive searching, we now know there is a better way – the Home Instead way. Mercedes and I are able to bring our collective experience, commitment to professionalism and the understanding of the needs of our clients and their families to ensure that the people that we care for are treated with respect, dignity and continue to live a stimulating and independent life.
We cover Torbay, Dartmouth, Totnes, Newton Abbot and their surrounding areas. Our services are flexible and cover non-medical care such as companionship, home help, personal care, meal preparation, local transportation, post-hospital care and medication reminders. We match our CAREGivers with our client’s interests so that they have the continuity of the same person visiting and common ground on which to build a relationship. We visit for a minimum of one hour and can provide up to full 24/7 support. Our CAREGivers are carefully selected for their compassion, empathy and reliability and with our training, are able to meet the changing needs of our clients.
We offer bespoke and specialised services to clients with Dementia, with accredited and in-depth training in this area. Importantly we recognise that our work not only assists our clients in maintaining and enhancing the quality of their lives but gives reassuring confidence and peace of mind to their families.
What makes us different?
• We turn up on time - every time;
• Continuity is important and we send the same person wherever possible. We would never send a stranger;
• Our CAREGivers have the time to develop a meaningful relationship when providing care with dignity and respect;
• Our CAREGivers encourage, stimulate and assist clients in a variety of day to day activities to maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.
• Our CAREGivers do not wear uniforms and look like family or friends who are visiting or taking clients out for a trip;
• Our business is personal. We are proud of our growing local reputation for providing an excellent service and will never compromise our standards.
We look forward to being of service to you. Please look at our services, the awards that Home Instead Senior Care has won for care and do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions.
Home Instead arranged for a lady to visit my mother for 1 hour on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. This is first to relieve my mother's partner (& carer) so that he can do some jobs and have some time to himself and secondly to provide female company just for a chat. The lady who visits is lovely, my mother really looks forward to seeing her and enjoys her company. Home Instead did really well to provide just the right person, based on questions asked at the outset.Stephen T - Son of Client
