Parkinson’s UK partnership at home care event

Just over a year ago, Home Instead entered into a partnership with Parkinson’s UK with the aim of driving improvements in home care and to offer a broad range of support to clients and families.

Yesterday (Thursday 19th May) we presented alongside the national charity at The Residential & Home Care Show, part of Health Plus Care.

We shared our experience and demonstrated the power of partnerships between private and third sector organisations.

A large part of our work together has been focused on the development of a training programme to allow us to upskill our Care Professionals so that they have the knowledge and expertise to care for someone living with a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

In the run up to the presentation we spoke with some of the individuals involved in the partnership to get their views. Importantly, we also spoke with a Care Professional and one of the families she supports.

Their feedback has been phenomenal. Mandy Bennett, daughter of Tony, a client who is receiving care from Parkinson’s trained Care Professionals from our South Lakes office said, “One of the best things about the training is that the girls know how to help dad; how to deal with his walking, standing and showering and his medication.

“Their knowledge is paramount to dad’s care.”

Care Professional, Candy Bradley said, “Because of the training I have been able to help Tony in many ways – ensuring he has his medication at the right time, which is really important and encouraging him to walk.

“Tony gets frustrated because of his Parkinson’s and he gets upset. But I understand that he’s not upset with me, it’s his situation. We don’t look at Tony as Tony with Parkinson’s; rather the fun-loving man that he is.”
