Oldham's Dementia Awareness Month is under way!

To celebrate the lives of people living with Dementia there will be lots of activities that the whole family can enjoy in Dementia Awareness Month which runs from 5th May – 8th June

Meri Purani Yaadein’ My old memories

An event for people of Asian heritage. Find out more about dementia, what support is available in Oldham and how faith can support emotional health and good dementia care.

Listen to presentations by and talk to someone from the Oldham Memory Service, a person with dementia, an Imam and a carer. Take part in Arts for Therapy’s live music and watch a mini play.

Also throughout the day, free arts and craft activity; aromatherapy; massage; IT activity and Mehndi.

Free lunch and refreshments as well as free transport available from 4 pick-up / drop-off points:

Oldham reminiscence walk

Bring the whole family for a memory walk in Alexandra Park.

Each walk will start with a film about dementia and a slide show about the park.

There will also be two Dementia Friend sessions at 12pm and 2pm.

The kids can get involved in lots of activities in the Growing Hub and in the children’s play spaces.

There will be a memory tree for you to display your reminiscences, a dementia information stand and donation boxes in the café and conservatory. 

All walkers will receive a potted sensory plant as a lasting memory of the walk.

Family fun day

Come along for a fun day of craft activities, including helping to make a giant forget me not flower in the library and gallery foyer.

Don’t miss a special showing of Oldham Coliseum Theatre’s Young Rep Company’s play, My Grandma from 2pm-3pm.

There will also be the chance to attend a Dementia Friend session at 1pm and you can share your memories on the library memory tree throughout the week.

Making memories – Creative reminiscence activities for older people and their carers

Take part in The Dementia Friendly trail which encourages people to visit different areas in the gallery with pointers for conversation starters based on the Gallery’s collections to encourage interaction and reminiscence for older people, carers and family members.

‘Past Times’ – discover the Gallery’s revamped memory boxes that carers and organisations can hire. These are themed and contain objects from the past that are useful for encouraging memories and reminiscence
