UK Malnutrition Awareness Week 2020 - 5th-12th Oct
2020 will be the third year of UK Malnutrition Awareness Week (#UKMAW2020), and we’ll be supporting the initiative across our HISC network by sharing the campaign’s great advice.
We know that with the incidence of COVID19 pandemic, our seniors have not been able to get out so often, some are feeling less fit and able and some are worried about winter, the approaching flu season and what will happen with the coronavirus. This means that raising the awareness of preventable malnutrition in older people has become even more important.
#UKMAW2020 is calling on everyone to:
- screen themselves, their loved ones and those they look after. This means if you are concerned about unexplained weight loss or are experiencing a loss of appetite/poor appetite and not eating well then you can use an online tool to ‘self-screen’. BAPEN - a Charitable Association that raises awareness of malnutrition - offers a free tool here.
- recognise and understand the risks of undernutrition and dehydration in later life,
- know what do to prevent malnutrition,
- know what to do if there are concerns about someone who has experienced unplanned weight loss.
The BAPEN website has a number of online resources and readily available information visit https://www.bapen.org.uk/ to find out more.
Nutrition is a core theme for us at Home Instead and you can also find lots of useful information on our website to share during #UKMAW2020. Here’s a few other links for you to find the information quickly:
