A rise in the number of elderly people who are hard of hearing and in need of at-home care has prompted care company, Home Instead in Cannock to launch a search for caregivers who can communicate using British Sign Language.

Due to an ageing population and changes in the social care system, Home Instead has witnessed a significant increase in the number of their clients who are deaf or have suffered hearing loss.

Home Instead owner Fran Sayer comments, “It is not until you work with clients who are profoundly deaf or deaf blind that you realise just how isolating and frightening it can be, especially when it becomes necessary to attend hospitals or doctors appointments.  It can be difficult to communicate with the people who are delivering care and we want to be able to help our clients to make themselves understood and to understand just what is happening to them when a stay in hospital may be necessary.”

Fran continues, “As caregivers it is our responsibility to provide our clients with the services they need, and this is a responsibility we take very seriously. We are really keen to find caregivers who are confident using British Sign Language and perhaps wouldn’t mind teaching the rest of the team a few basics too!”
