Hairdresser turned carer

Local Stone man, Craig Underhill, 36 has joined the Stone team of Home Instead, in the role of caregiver. The company specialises in providing care in the home for the elderly.

Craig, who has run his own mobile hairdressing business for the last 14 years, decided he wanted a complete change in direction and a career where he can give something back to the community. As a hairdresser Craig developed great listening skills, providing advice and 'counselling', Craig knew he could take these skills and use them in his new role with Home Instead.

One of Craig's clients used to love going to museums but now has difficulty getting out and about. Recently Craig took him on a day trip to Les Oakes in Cheadle, Staffordshire where he could admire the reclaimed architectural finds, antiques and objects from bygone eras, even a collection of 750 horse drawn vehicles.

Commenting, Craig said 'I am excited about being able to make a difference to the way care is delivered in the area. The services we deliver are varied and help older people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible as well as enriching their lives. A trip out can transform a person's day as often they would be unable to leave the house without help.'

Judith Herrod, who owns and runs the business, recruited Craig and is delighted with his enthusiasm. Commenting she said: 'Craig has a really bubbly character and is a great addition to the team. If there are any more 'Craigs' out there who would like a career change I'd love to hear from them as we are always on the look out for caring and compassionate people (male and female!) to join the team.'

Home Instead is rapidly building a reputation as one of the UK's leading at-home care companies. Their service ranges from personal care to companionship, meal preparation, post-discharge care, medication reminders, shopping and errands. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
