Caring Mary

When her husband died in 2009, local lady Mary Darton (aged 60) from Weston was determined that her life without him would be as fulfilled as she could make it. That's exactly what she has done, starting a new career as a caregiver.

Mary had been married to her husband, Fred, who was 15 years her senior, for 40 years. The couple had always led busy and productive lives. Fred owned a number of garages and petrol filling stations in Essex and following his retirement in 1984 the couple toured around the UK buying up businesses, improving them and then selling them on.

Nine years ago Fred was diagnosed with prostate cancer and, as Mary says: 'He fought it all the way.' During the final weeks of his life Fred spent time in hospital, eventually returning home where he felt he had a better chance of a recovery being in familiar surroundings.

During this time at home Fred was cared for by Marie Curie nurses who, quoting Mary, did 'The most amazing job.'

The hospital had also employed local Long Sutton care company, Home Instead Senior Care, who sent their caregivers in four times a day to make sure that Fred was comfortable. During their visits they also spent time with Mary, always making time for her to ensure she was coping and providing some much needed company.

Fred sadly passed away late last year. Shortly afterwards Mary spotted an advertisement from Home Instead Senior Care who were looking to recruit caregivers in the area. Having been on the receiving end of their wonderful support and wanting to get some structure back in her life, Mary decided to apply, realising that if she was successful the job would get her out and about in her local community.

Thankfully for Mary, and her new clients, she was successful and has started her new career. Speaking of her new job, Mary said: 'I really feel like I am part of a team and work with a good crowd of girls. I'm working 3 mornings a week working 5½ hours each day.

'My clients are lovely and I really enjoy spending time with them. I consider myself to be very fortunate to have found this new career at my age. It gives me a real sense of purpose and I know I am making a difference.'
