Local people with dementia are to be helped to get better care and greater understanding of their condition thanks to a pioneering project which trains ‘Dementia Champions’ such as Angela Binney from Home Instead in Barnsley.
The Dementia Champions project is a joint Barnsley Council and local NHS initiative which aims to help local people and their families live well with dementia.
Local people, like Angela, were invited to apply for twelve Dementia Champion positions. Angela was keen to be involved as in her day to day work she comes across many people living with dementia.
As a Dementia Champion, Angela has undergone specialist training. Armed with in-depth understanding of the various types of dementia Angela is now in a position to work with other partners including GPs to ensure that people with dementia are receiving more personalised and effective levels of care.
The Champions will help to ensure that a person centred approach is adopted by those caring for people with dementia and they will also offer support to local families.
Angela comments, “It is a privilege for me to be part of this project and I really feel that it will make a difference to people’s lives. Dementia is complex and each case should be treated individually. Better understanding will ultimately lead to better care.
“Through the scheme we will help to educate carers and families. We are hoping to start some evening discussion groups for family members and the Champions have been learning about techniques such as circle dancing and using music to trigger pathways in the brain. It’s all really fascinating and very useful.”
