Being a CAREGiver
Home Instead Senior Care are the pioneers of relationship-led care for the elderly, we not only put the client first but we build a bespoke service tailored around each client focusing on what they really want and need. The Home Instead approach is completely different to any senior care service out there today, but what makes us unique? We asked Sharon, the first care giver to join our team back in September 2015 to help us describe the Home Instead way.
‘I choose to work with the team at Havant because they have a 1 hour minimum call out for each client, meaning we truly get to spend real time with them and are able to build that all important trust between us, and of course, we can make sure that they have everything they need and want. I had previously worked with children and was a full time mum for over 20 years before I joined the team at Havant. Helping clients with dementia is my biggest challenge and knowing what to say when a client is either upset or confused. Mark Gettinby, Director of Home Instead Care Havant has extensive knowledge and experience of caring for the elderly from previous roles in the industry. Mark is also a Dementia Champion and coaches companies and groups on how to help people of all ages with Dementia so we also have a fountain of knowledge at our fingertips.
If anyone was looking for a change of career into caring I would say to them that it is very rewarding to make each client happy and it’s great to know you have been there for someone when they needed you the most. I found the team at Home Instead Care Havant via a recommendation from a friend, they are easy to talk to and always make me feel welcome and relaxed. The 4 day training programme covered everything I could possibly want or need to know for my new role, and with the added bonus of an observation period afterwards I had a fantastic introduction joining the team. We are all like-minded people and have a genuine desire to help others, and with our varied backgrounds we can easily be assigned to a client with similar backgrounds, interests, hobbies, and culture.
I am so happy at work, it doesn’t feel like a job at all, I have the benefit of spending time in both the office and out with clients. You never stop learning in this role and I look forward to learning more as time goes on.’

My husband has Frontotemporal Dementia, a condition that affects his ability to speak or take part in a conversation. This had proved a huge stumbling block with most agencies when trying to find a suitable companion for him. Home Instead has a unique approach to caring. They actually take the time to research the client so that the service provided is tailor made so to speak. I didn't want a carer for my husband he needed a companion and that's exactly what he's got. His companion certainly goes the extra mile to ensure my husband can once again enjoy some of the activities he once loved. Badminton, the Golf driving range, walks, museums or just a coffee somewhere, nothing is too much trouble, it's all about my husband and what makes a difference to him for those few hours. Thank you Home Instead for really caring about someone who is very special to me.Mrs G - Client's wife
