Caring Company Supports World Parkinson’s Day

Caring Company Supports World Parkinson’s Day

Wednesday 11th April 2018 was World Parkinson's Day, and local care provider Home Instead Senior Care from Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk understand why it's so important for everyone, including their caregivers, to understand more about this disease.

As well as regularly running Parkinson’s Explained workshops for the caregiving team, to coincide with World Parkinson’s Day, the caregiving team were also able to meet and talk to Renee Dickinson, who is living with Parkinson’s and actively involved with the Parkinson’s UK Harrogate branch, organising vital fundraising to support the work that they do to make sure people living locally with Parkinson’s have a great quality of life.

Beth Parsons from Stray FM Radio also joined the team at Home Instead to learn more about Parkinson’s and you can listen to the Stray FM’s Health and Wellbeing Show by clicking on the link below:

Out in the community, Home Instead caregiver and founder of Golf in Society (CIC), Anthony Blackburn organised a fundraising event entitled ‘Putt for Parkinson’s’ in conjunction with Rudding Park golf course in Harrogate, all in aid of Parkinson’s UK. Home Instead rallied a team together to take part in a six- hole competition and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

The team at Home Instead understand why raising awareness is so important as the latest studies from Parkinson’s UK estimate that the number of people living with Parkinson’s in the UK has grown to 145,000 with 50 people being diagnosed every day

In 2018 they estimate that 18,400 people over 45 will be diagnosed with the condition

As we are a growing ageing population, the number of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the UK is expected to increase by nearly a fifth between 2018 and 2025- rising to an estimated 168,000

What is Parkinson’s?

Parkinson's disease is when the brain loses the ability to create enough dopamine for the body which would usually be responsible for controlling movement. It therefore affects everything from writing and walking, to talking, picking things up and everything in between.

Symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, slower movements, fatigue, or anxiety are possible, but as each person with Parkinson's is so different so are the symptoms.

The cause is unknown, and there is no cure yet.

How can we help?

Here at Home Instead we have joined the UK Parkinson’s Excellence Network and are exclusively allowed to deliver a 3-hour course entitled ‘Parkinson’s Explained’ to all our caregivers

The course increases knowledge and understanding of Parkinson’s, to identify challenges associated with the symptoms including motor and non-motor symptoms, and to understand the importance of medication and the side effects of the medication.

We can then provide tailored care and support, for example, helping to take medication on time, helping with the motor symptoms associated with the condition that affects mobility and enabling someone to remain active, we can help at meal times and with other every day activities of living.

Of course, our visits are not rushed and are a minimum of one hour, which is so important when that person living with Parkinson’s needs extra time and a calm environment for their daily activities.

We work with Parkinson’s UK and the local branches of the Parkinson’s Society plus a range of health professionals including the GP’s, Parkinson’s specialist nurses, occupational therapists, speech/ language therapists and physiotherapists to ensure that there is a multi-disciplinary approach to care.
