"I’d been made redundant and wasn’t sure what the next chapter of my life would hold. I saw an advertisement - CAREGivers needed by Home Instead. I had absolutely no experience as a carer but having recently had a conversation with my 90 year old mother, I realised how important remaining in your own home can be for elderly people. Having the security of familiar things around you, sitting in your own comfortable chair, having your cup of tea in a special cup and saucer that’s been given to you by a family member or waking up in the bedroom you’ve slept in for years.

I picked up the phone to make enquiries and was greeted with a warm and welcoming response – the rest, as they say, is history. I had a very informal interview, was accepted, trained and stepped into the most rewarding job I could ever have imagined. I cook, I clean, I do shopping, I wash people and many other tasks but we should never under estimate the value of sitting and holding a client’s hand when they feel sad or confused. The first day I realised that I really was making a difference was when a client said ‘you make me feel safe when you’re here with me’. Powerful words.

How many people really have the luxury of a job that they look forward to every day, yes, there are days I feel tired, days I ache and days when things get a bit messy, but all that is surpassed by the knowledge that I am enabling my clients to stay where they most wanted to be – in their own homes and that my visit is important to them. Calls are never less than an hour, so there is time to really get to know clients and for them to get to know me.

The support offered by staff at Home Instead is exceptional, they are always there behind me when I need them and always happy to listen and help when I need advice. I attend regular CAREGiver meetings where I get to know my colleagues and regular training to advance my knowledge on issues affecting the elderly.

If you are considering working as a CAREGiver I would say just one thing - DO IT – pick up the phone and walk into the best job ever."
