Working together with the South Western Ambulance Service

Working together with the South Western Ambulance Service

At Home Instead Senior Care we firmly believe in working with others to provide the best support possible for older people at home.

Recently we have been delighted to link up with the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWAST). Through their ‘Right Care, Right Place, Right Time’ initiative they are seeking to improve the way carers are able to support people who have had a fall at home.

As part of this initiative, project leader Jonathan Hammond-Williams (Clinical Development Officer for SWAST) and Home Instead Operations Manager Michelle Keeble-Hawkes each spent a day shadowing the other on the job out in the local community.

Michelle found this gave her a fascinating insight into a day in the lives of an ambulance crew, with highly-skilled paramedics who face constant demand and have to prioritise emergency calls. This can mean those who have had a fall but are not seriously injured can sometimes have to wait for assistance. Jonathan discovered how Home Instead provides a very personal service to clients and how frustrating it can be for CAREGivers who are not currently allowed to help people get up after a fall without paramedics attending.

The solution was shared  with Gloucestershire care providers at the Right Care ‘Ambulance and Domiciliary Care’ event held in Cheltenham on 21st November when SWAST presented new guidelines and training for carers working in the home when people have fallen, together with demonstrations of various types of equipment which can be used, when appropriate, to help raise people safely off the floor, much more quickly.

Speaking at the event Michelle outlined how Home Instead  plans to lead the way by adopting the new SWAST post-falls guidelines and taking up the training as soon as possible. She encouraged other care organisations to so the same.

To further improve its post-falls service to clients Home Instead is also currently looking at the very latest equipment available and we hope to have more news on these exciting developments in February!
