Feeling anxious about going back into the community?

Whilst the prospect of lockdown restrictions being lifted is exciting for many, not everyone might share this excitement. The long-term effects of not leaving the house for such a long time could mean that perhaps you are feeling anxiety, or have lost confidence and feel withdrawn from life after not seeing friends and family for such a long time. However, as the weather becomes warmer and community events begin to open up again, now is a better time than ever to get back your love for life! Here are a few tips which might help:

Go at your own pace


The first few times you go out might make you feel anxious but know that others will also be feeling this way. You can help manage this by taking things gradually. Work out what you’re most worried about and make a plan to make it more manageable. There are lots of ways to do this. Let people know what you feel comfortable doing and don’t feel pressured into doing more than you want.

If you are going shopping remember to choose times of day which are less busy, such as early in the morning, or on a weekday. Keep a safe social distance and wipe down the trolley or basket and remember to pay contactless instead of cash.

Try techniques to help reduce anxiety


You might find it calming to listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks when you go out for the first few times. You could call someone you know if you are going out alone, it may help to hear a friendly voice. Take some slow, deep breaths to help calm you before you leave the house or when you get back.

Reach out


Talk to people you trust about how you are feeling. You may be surprised to find that many of your friends and family are experiencing the same worries. Find out what they’re doing to help manage their concerns and see if there are things you can do together. Going for a walk might still be the better option rather than visiting shops and cafes.
