Oldham's Winter Wellbeing Event: 12th - 16th December 2011

Home Instead Senior Care are pleased to support Oldham Council and all its partner organisations in promoting the week long event aimed at increasing the wellbeing of older people in the borough. Home Instead will be in attendance on the Friday to assist Age Concern in the distribution of their Falls Prevention plans. Please see below for the full details:

Winter Wellbeing Week – Unit 27, Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre, between Bon Marché and River Island

 Age Concern Oldham & Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service are working in partnership with Oldham Council, Oldham Credit Union and a whole host of local organisations to hold a week-long event in Oldham Town Centre to help people stay healthy and well throughout the winter months. 

 There will be something different on offer every day of the week.  The programme for the week includes:

Monday 12thDecember

10am – 3pm

Make the most of your money!

  • Benefits advice.  Bring information about your income and savings, find out what you are entitled to and we will help you to claim
  • Get help with fuel debt advice
  • Energy Efficiency advice and information on how to get the best gas & electricity tariffs
  • Free E-on home energy checks by Age Concern
  • Oldham Credit Union services
  • Housing & Council Tax Benefit Service
  • Find out about Carers Individual Budgets
  • Advice on will writing, power of attorney and advance decisions
  • Useful factsheets and information to take away

Tuesday 13thDecember

10am – 3pm

Free walking stick exchange: 10am – 12pm

Make your house a safe & happy home!

  • Arrange a home visit for a free E-on home energy check by Age Concern with lots of energy saving freebies
  • Is your stick in good nick?!  Come and get an MOT for your walking stick.  If it’s in bad nick or not the right size, you will get a free replacement,10am - 12pm
  • Arrange for free smoke alarm fitting from the Fire Service
  • Find out about services that can give you a bit of extra help to stay independent: shopping, cleaning and aids & adaptations
  • Find out about and take a look at the latest gadgets and gizmos that can help make your life easier
  • Information and advice from local housing providers and find out if you could benefit from the Downsizing project

Wednesday 14th December

Free Electric Blanket Testing:

9am – 4.30pm

Get Toasty!

  • Free electric blanket testing with a free replacement if your electric blanket fails the test (one per household, while stocks last).  To make your appointment, telephone Age Concern Oldham on 0161 633 0213.  If you are housebound and unable to bring your electric blanket to the event, please telephone 0161 633 0213 to make alternative arrangements.
  • Fire Safety advice and a limited number of Carbon Monoxide detectors, Energy Saving Bulbs, Plug in timers and Deep fat fryers available free of charge to those who require them
  • Meet Mr Toast and find out how you can get free loft and cavity wall insulation
  • Arrange a home visit for a free E-on home energy check by Age Concern with lots of energy saving freebies
  • Find out about other energy saving schemes and grants

Thursday 15th December

Take care of yourself this winter!

  • Blood pressure checks and lifestyle advice from the Stroke Association
  • Information about the flu campaign
  • Get advice about how Oldham Carers Centre can support you in your caring role
  • Information from OldhamHealth Improvement Service
  • information and advice about help available for people with visual and hearing impairments from the Sensory Team
  • Advice on how to get active from Oldham Community Leisure
  • Information from Oldham Diabetes Voluntary Support Group

Friday 16thDecember

10am – 3pm

Free slipper exchange:

10am – 2pm

Hand in your sloppy slippers!

  • Bring your sloppy slippers to our amnesty and get a new pair fitted for free by the podiatry service (while stocks last),10am - 2pm
  • Falls Prevention advice from the Community Physiotherapy Team, Age Concern and Home Instead Senior Care
  • Advice on how to get active from Oldham Community Leisure
  • Blood pressure checks and lifestyle advice from the Stroke Association
  • Information about equipment to help you in your home from Age Concern More Mobile Community Equipment shop
