On Friday June 15th the team at Home Instead Senior Care in Oldham and Saddleworth decorated their office with balloons and posters, put together an information stand and turned into work wearing something purple to show their support for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).

WEAAD is about people from all over the world getting together to organise activities that highlight elder abuse issues, and promote a global objective to make our world free of elder abuse. The management team at Home Instead issued information to all their mobile CAREGivers, who support older people to remain independent in their own homes, about WEAAD. They were encouraged to wear something purple and spread the word.

Registered manager Helen Thomas said ‘all the CAREGivers receive in depth training on the subject of safeguarding and the prevention of abuse but it never does any harm to issue reminders and updates’. A senior manager from the local authority with extensive experience on the subject of safeguarding has been invited to give an information talk at the staff meeting on 27th June 2012.

Mick Sheehan, managing director said ‘our aim is to support our clients to the best of our ability and ensure they remain safe and secure in their own homes. To do this it’s essential that the team know what the various forms of abuse are, how to spot the signs and symptoms and then what to do about it’.

Home Instead clients have a care plan tailored specifically to their own needs and the service is extremely flexible ranging from a few hours a week to 24 hour care. Services can include personal care; such as assistance with bathing, dressing and medications. Home help; covering housework, shopping, meal preparation and household duties and companionship services; that can involve everything from escorting clients on visits or appointments to simple conversation and good company.

The company also provides a range of specialist services, which include Alzheimer’s and dementia care, convalescence care and respite care.
