Care company to create 50 jobs

With care of the elderly remaining high on the political agenda, a business specialising in caring for older people in their own homes in the Cheltenham, Tewksbury and Cirencester areas has opened. Based in Ullenwood to the south of Cheltenham the company, Home Instead Senior Care, is looking to create 50 jobs in the coming year.

For owner, local lady Amanda Hamer, this is an exciting new venture and a chance to combine her business skills with the opportunity to help other people and put something back into the local community.

Amanda, who lives near Cirencester, has worked in the public sector for many years but always dreamt of running her own business. Amanda’s business choice was influenced not only by her previous career, which saw her delivering community support and working with the voluntary sector, but also by her sister and sister-in-law who work in the healthcare sector.

Speaking about her decision to set up the business, Amanda says, “I was inspired to become involved in the care sector by my sister who works in a rehabilitation unit for older people at a hospital and by my sister-in-law who works in a hospice.

“They have a direct impact on people’s quality of life and caring for the older people in the local community will allow me and my team to do the same.

“The companionship and care service that we provide allows people to live in their own homes, leading a relatively independent life, for longer than would otherwise be possible. I think it’s really important that we allow people to stay at home, in familiar surroundings and with all their memories.

“My parents and my husband’s parents are reaching an age where we have started to discuss these issues as a family and it really brings it home to you. I know it’s stating the obvious but we are all going to get old – and you ask yourself where you would like to end up, and how would you like to be cared for.

Amanda is keen to talk to local people with compassionate and caring natures who are interested in working with elderly people. She is keen to stress that candidates don’t need to have experience in the care sector as they will receive excellent training, but they may well have experience looking after a relative or friend.

Commenting on their need to recruit local caregivers, she said: “We need local people to come forward and be part of our team. We will only employ people who are committed to making a difference, treating our clients with dignity and respect and working to the highest professional standards. I would urge local people who might be interested to get in touch.”

Amanda is also keen to stress that the way Home Instead delivers care is very different to that provided by task-based care agencies. She continues, “Our visits are typically of one hour duration, allowing our team of caregivers to spend quality time with clients. We also match clients and caregivers so they share common areas of interest.”
