Gone fishing!

One lucky Cambridgeshire resident has fallen on his feet, getting to enjoy his favourite pastime (fishing) whilst being at work.

Darren Jackson works for Cambridgeshire business, Home Instead Senior Care, a company which provides care in the home for clients in the area. One of the unique aspects of the service provided by the award-winning company is that Caregivers are matched to their clients so that people with shared interests spend time together.

This is exactly what happened to Darren. During his job interview he was asked about his interests and fishing came top of the list. The team at Home Instead were delighted to hear this as one of their clients, who suffers with Huntingdon’s disease, has a love of fishing.

Now every Saturday the two enjoy a day out, many spent over the summer on the river indulging in their favourite pastime.  His daughter, who normally looks after him, said it is delightful to see her dad being able to go out into the fresh air and do what he loves as he could not do it on his own.

Commenting on his job, Darren said: “My role as a Caregiver has allowed me to build some wonderful relationships with the clients I support. Because my clients have similar interests to me I get to partake in my hobbies at work!  This is a very rewarding job and it gives me great pleasure.”

The business was set up by Mike Francis who is keen to talk to local people with compassionate and caring natures who are interested in working with elderly people. Candidates don’t need to have experience in the care sector as they will receive excellent training, but they may well have care experience looking after a relative or friend. He said: “I can’t promise everyone who works for us a fishing trip. Our service extends from companionship to personal care but our aim is to provide our Caregivers with high levels of job satisfaction and our clients with a high quality service.”

Home Instead is rapidly building a reputation as one of the UK’s leading care companies. Their unique service is tailored to the needs of individual clients and ranges from companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, post-discharge care, medication reminders, shopping and errands. The service allows people to remain at home and lead a relatively independent life and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
