Age UK Barnet and Home Instead Barnet teamed up to present a Falls Awareness Event at the Anne Owens Centre in East Finchley. The event featured talks on nutrition and bone strength by Vivienne Vard, Nutritionist, an exercise demonstration by Deborah Cura from Age UK Barnet Living Well Project, and Meri Bartley from Flamingos Dancing gave an exciting demonstration of Zumba Gold.
In addition we were very lucky to have Sylvia Salter, Senior Occupational Therapist and Sheila Williams, Senior Physiotherapist from the Falls Clinic at Finchley Memorial Hospital to provide advice. Sylvia brought along a range of aids to help with reaching and lifting.
John Relevy from the Independent Living Company presented range of mobility aids and products to make life easier at home.
Martin Rosen from the Barnet Diabetes Voluntary Group also attended the event to distribute information about their activities in Barnet.
Dale Bevington from Home Instead Senior Care in Barnet introduced two self help booklets: Make Your Home Falls Free and Your Falls Free Plan. These booklets were sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care as part of Age UK’s National Falls Prevention Campaign.
Falls are a major cause of hospitalisation amongst older people and Age UK and Home Instead recognise the reduction of serious falls would have a very beneficial effect on the wellbeing and independence of older people. In Barnet we are planning another two Falls Prevention events one on June 21 at the Barnet Multicultural Centre in Hendon and another on September 13 at the Friends in Need Community Centre in East Barnet. These events in addition to being a lot of fun provide an opportunity to meet people, and gain an introduction to services and advice to help prevent falls. Contact us if you would like additional information on these events.
