We were using Home Instead once a week for companionship. Unfortunately an emergency arose when my mother suffered a sudden and serious illness. We telephoned Home Instead who immediately responded and help soon arrived. The carer stayed all day and did all she could to make her as comfortable as possible. Finally at 11.00 pm my mother was admitted to hospital, but the carer continued to stay to clean and launder everything before leaving. After a two week hospital stay we were then able to arrange with Home Instead twenty four hour care until my mother was back on her feet and able to cope. We are so grateful to Home Instead for responding so quickly and for giving our 94 year old mother gentle and sympathetic care when it was so desperately needed.- Mr S – Hatch End

We were so delighted with Home Instead that we used them twice, for my grandmother and also for my father. A number of years ago, we were discussing care for our elderly parents with Age Concern. They advised that they had heard of a "new" Company in the area, Home Instead, but as yet had no feedback about them. We had a quick browse of the web site and decided to take "a gamble". It was the best gamble we ever took, a winner all round. Initially, our requirements were simple, someone to do a little housework and provide a little companionship. Just wanted to give some positive feedback with regards to Home Instead agency. My colleagues and I have used the agency recently when the Reenablement and other contracted providers have been unable to provide care. Home Instead Cannock has exceeded my expectations in every respect. For the past four months, they have been helping to care for my 94-year-old mother. I can't thank Paul enough; he has been a wonderful carer to my uncle. Living outside of London makes it difficult for us to call in and keep an eye on uncle but Paul is always willing to go the extra mile and has even been kind enough to call in and do his shopping on his days off. Dear Elaine and Mark As you know we lost Mum on Saturday evening after a severe stroke. I hardly know where to begin to thank you for what Home Instead did for Mum and for me. Everyone who knew her commented that the last year had been a 'golden year' for her. She had recovered from a fall (the reason I asked you to start to visit her) and was as happy and well as she had been in recent years, relieved of any fear of what might happened to her in the future, and look forward to the visits from her companion, and friend, Cathy. When Mum had her stroke, Cathy found her and managed her admission to hospital, staying with her for 7 hours until I could be contacted and travel. How alarming would this have been for Mum alone. She continued to visit Mum in hospital, who was pleased to see her and hear her voice. She provided support to me at this time, both practical and emotional, without which it would all have been much harder. You and Cathy made such a huge difference to events for both of us. The following nomination from our client Mr S was submitted to South Staffordshire County Council for The Dignity In Care Award. Wendy is supplied to me by Home Instead Senior Care Cannock as a carer & companion for my wife Margaret. Margaret has Huntington’s Chorea and is totally dependent for everything from her carer. Margaret was diagnosed with the illness approximately 20 years ago. I rely on carers to help me care for Margaret 24 hours a day. During the time Wendy has been coming over the past 12 months, Margaret has shown a lot of improvement both in health and spirit. This is quite against all that I was told could happen by specialists, doctor’s etc. The improvement is totally due to the consideration and kindness shown to her by Wendy. She has proved to be the main person who can look after all of Margaret's needs, both physically and mentally. This includes administering to her peg site, giving food and water in correct amounts at the proper times and recording everything correctly. Margaret is always kept clean and tidy and comfortable with a gentle ease that is essential for her condition. It is also nice to see the companionship that has built up between them both. Looking after Margaret's mind is vital to her well being, whether Wendy is reading, talking to Margaret or just laughing, the pleasure Margaret receives is very visible. There is something else which I would call dedication. Wendy fell on her arm and has been in plaster for about 8 weeks, recently the plaster was removed. Throughout all of this time, Wendy never missed an appointment and continued with all of her work undeterred. She turned up mornings, afternoons, evenings or any day of the week as we needed her, always with a smile, readily there to help. About four years ago, Margaret was especially unwell, everyone including family members said she must go into a nursing home. I am writing to thank you and your caregivers for the all the support and compassion you have shown towards my aunt and uncle who both suffer from Alzheimer’s. At the beginning of the year, I was considering residential care due to their confusion and forgetfulness, and an incident where my aunt overdosed on her medication. The care agency at the time was failing in their duty by sending a myriad of different personnel, which only added to their confusion. Home Instead was recommended by a friend, so I felt I had nothing to lose by making a quick phone call. Not such a quick call as it turned out. Within ten minutes you ticked all my boxes and I knew I was talking to the right people. After an hour we set up a meeting, and the rest is history as they say. It’s an absolute pleasure to deal with such professional, caring, trustworthy and kind people. I feel you have given my aunt and uncle a new lease of life, which I cannot, thank you for enough. I cannot praise this company enough for their professionalism and kindness when I needed care for my 89 yr old mother who was experiencing difficulties caring for herself at home. They responded immediately after my frantic telephone call, visiting me at home and going through the options available for my mother. They may not be the cheapest choice but the old adage of ‘you get what you pay for' certainly rang true in comparison to other organisations I contacted e.g. not phoning back, uncertain about what care they could offer, unsuitable times etc. The carer was introduced to Mum before she started, spending time getting to know her and the situation, explaining how she would be helping and how she could assist with dressing and preparing meals. Although Mum was reluctant at first to admit she required help, the carer's consistent attendance and kindness soon allayed the fears and she looked forward to her daily visits, enjoying the company and conversations. The fact that the carers visits where always for an hour ensured that it was not a case of in and out in 15 minutes with no time for companionship as suggested by other companies. The time spent with the carer meant that I could relax knowing my Mum was in safe hands. I would recommend this company unreservedly to anyone requiring care for either themselves or a relative and would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff for their thoughtfulness, reassurance and attention to detail. When my wife was diagnosed with a terminal illness last spring I was recommended to engage carers from 'Home Instead Senior Care' a Sawbridgeworth Company. Trying to ensure a high standard of care is provided to an elderly parent can be a minefield. Until we contacted Home Instead we had previously employed two organisations who were unable to provide staff continuity, reliability or staff who were sufficiently well trained. Home Instead has been a really refreshing experience in comparison. Kerry, the Manager took time and care to really try and understand our father’s needs and to match him with Sue, his carer. Sue provides an excellent service by taking time to talk to and listen to my Dad; she is trained in how to work with people with dementia so understands how to relate to him. Kerry is regularly in touch to let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of, meaning we have peace of mind. Dad has regular company when the family are working and unable to be there as often as we would wish, which is reassuring for us. Our Experience of Home Instead, manage a team of four Care Coordinators working across the UK who support our long term service users. We are routinely involved in setting up home care support either with or without the involvement of the local social services department. All too often we find that care agencies will send in a multitude of different carers to the person, at unpredictable times and very often with the worker having no idea of what they are expected to do on that visit. This is not to denigrate the good efforts we do see from some individual care workers, and we know that demands on them are high and can be unpredictable, but even allowing for this our experience has generally not been good. With the Home Instead branches we have started to use we have a completely different story. The first thing that sets them apart from the other agencies is that their minimum duration for a call is one hour. On the face of it this might seem a little extreme but this is because Home Instead attaches great importance to the caring relationship. For them it is not a case of dashing in for a quarter of an hour to prompt someone to take their medication. It is about taking time to get to know the person, consider what other tasks might need to be done and always thinking about ways to improve that person’s quality of life and independence. We also notice that with Home Instead there is a real effort by the managers to keep the number of different carers for a person to a minimum – again, so that each carer really gets to know the person they are supporting and what kind of things to stay alert to when they visit. They understand that relationship is everything. None of this is a question of “icing on the cake”. In the last year two years where we have used Home Instead, we have seen the lives of our service users transformed. We are also finding that with this quality support, our service users are being enabled to remain at home much longer than would otherwise be the case. Home Instead are now our first agency of choice and we look forward to seeing more branches being set up around the UK.- Mr. Andrew P
