Home care company Home Instead Senior Care has teamed up with Age UK to help promote their campaign on how to make your home and yourself ‘falls free’. Home Instead Senior Care have kindly sponsored the production of 2 A4 sized booklets entitled ‘Make your home ‘falls- free’’ and ‘Your ‘falls- free’ plan’ both publications give good sound advice on how to keep steady on your feet and how to keep safe at home.
Age UK reports that every five hours an older person is killed by an accidental fall in the home – this is the equivalent to 1,500 people dying every year. Usually two or more risk factors interact to cause a fall (such as poor balance and low vision, which can cause a trip and fall going up a single step). Home or environmental risk factors play a role in about half of falls.
Local Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk branch of Home Instead Senior Care were recently invited by Peverel Retirement house manager Pauline Harman at Vale Court, Knaresborough to initiate the campaign to her residents. Sheena Van Parys and Pet Fowler Watts from Home instead Senior Care handed out the publications and advised the residents on how to keep falls free in their home. As well as getting lots of information and advice everyone enjoyed homemade cakes, tea, coffee and a good natter.
Owner Sheena Van Parys commented: ‘It is great to get involved with such an important issue, every year thousands of older people fall at home and are seriously injured, as everyone knows it can really knock your confidence when you fall and can have a huge impact on your lifestyle, even more so as we get older. The Age UK booklets are very useful and it’s fantastic that Home Instead on a national level has got involved to help promote the campaign’.
