Caring is in Peter’s veins
In Peter Harrison’s role as a senior caregiver for at-home care company, Home Instead Senior Care in Leicester, he spends his time caring for the elderly in the local community. However, Peter’s caring nature extends beyond this, and in his spare time Peter is a regular platelet donor.
Peter, who has been working with Home Instead for a year and a half, started to give blood in 1979 and began donating platelets in 1992. Since then, Peter has recently reached his 500th time donating platelets and is the only person in Leicestershire to have achieved this!
Donating platelets is similar to giving whole blood, but only the platelets are taken from the donor. Just like blood donation, there is an urgent need for platelet donors as platelets are needed for patients who are unable to make enough in their bone marrow.
Peter commented, “I am honoured to have reached my 500th time donating and I really enjoy continuing my caring role after providing care for the elderly.”
Home Instead Senior Care’s at-home care service is tailored to the needs of individual clients and ranges from companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, post-discharge care, medication reminders, shopping and errands to personal care. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
