I recently attended a monthly Drop-In Centre for people with Parkinson’s, their families and friends at the Pollock Pavilion, 227 Ferry Road; where I was genuinely struck by the warm welcome and supportive atmosphere which greeted me. Meeting are from 2pm to 4pm and dates for 2012 are as follows – 6th January, 3rd February, 2nd March, 6th April, 4th May and 1st June.
This is just one of many activities run by the Edinburgh Branch of Parkinson’s UK, ranging from monthly branch meetings with guests speakers; to weekly exercise / swimming / bowls groups; to a carers support group. And for those that enjoy singing there is ‘Singing4fun’.
For those concerned about Parkinson’s, or with a recent diagnosis, Parkinson’s UK has information and support officers in Edinburgh. They offer one to one confidential advice and support, can give advice on benefits, and recommend other organisations which may be able to help.
NHS Lothian has the Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist Service based at the Royal Victoria Hospital. They offer a wide range of support and advice, including advocacy; information and support; symptom management & clinics.
Finally, for those wishing training in Parkinson’s care, the Edinburgh branch run ‘Side by Side’ and Parkinson’s UK have education and training for professionals.
