Local at-home care provider Home Instead Senior Care based in Stone which also covers the Stafford area is calling for more people to come forward and become Caregivers. Judith Herrod opened the office three years ago and her first employee was Caregiver Jenny Murdoch (65), she was already retired but proved that you are never too old to take up a new role in life. She tells her story in the hope that other likeminded people will take up the opportunity for a new challenge even when you are retired.
Jenny explained:”I saw in the paper that this new company was recruiting and thought it looked interesting. Having worked for a sheltered housing scheme I knew it was the type of work I would enjoy but I didn’t think I would get the job because I had already retired due to arthritis in my knee. However, a successful knee operation got me back on my feet and I felt that I wasn’t ready to give up work. The rest is history, here I am three years later and I’m loving what I do.”
Jenny works between 12 and 16 hours a week helping her six regular clients with a range of services from preparing meals to general housework and sitting with clients to give their loved ones a break. Jenny continues:
“I have a very special lady called Joyce Maclean who is 81 years old and I have been visiting her since I started the job, in fact she was Home Instead’s second ever client. I sometimes take her out to lunch and in the summer we will often go for a drive. I also accompany her to doctors’ appointments. She refers to me as her ‘friend’ which is nice and means a lot to me.”
“What I particularly like about working for Home Instead is that they allow me the time to visit my clients without feeling too rushed. Some have no family nearby, so my visits are really important to them and I feel that I am able to make their lives just that little bit better.”
According to owner Judith Herrod, Jenny’s experience is not unique: “The older population is growing at a rapid rate and an increasing number of people over the retirement age want to remain at work. We employ people from a wide age range with many different backgrounds; the most important thing is that they have a caring nature.”
These are really rewarding jobs and often people simply don’t realise how much they have to offer particularly when you get older they tend to think that if they haven’t worked in care they wouldn’t get a job. But many people may have been looking after and caring for their own family and friends, which of course gives them plenty of necessary life experience.
