Home Instead Senior Care, a new service providing at-home care for elderly locals, has promoted local woman, Janice Clarke, from a part-time caregiver to office administrator (and part-time caregiver!) after only three months with the company.
Janice, who lives in Alresford, has worked in the care sector for a number of years and began working for the Alresford-based company as a caregiver in April this year. Prior to that she worked for Nurse Plus in Basingstoke and at Tudor Rose, a care home for people with learning disabilities, in Alton.
With demand for at-home care of the elderly on the increase Home Instead, which launched its services in March, needed an extra pair of hands in the office. Owing to her sunny disposition, enthusiasm and dedication to her role, owners Steve and Jan Gapper decided she would be the ideal person to help.
Janice now works in the office in an administration role for ten hours a week and the rest of her time is spent looking after clients.
Commenting on her new dual role, Janice said, “Having two jobs is really interesting. In my office role one of the most important jobs that I do is organising the caregiver schedules. It’s my job to make sure we have the right people in the right place at the right time and it gives me great satisfaction to know it’s all organised!
“I find my work as a caregiver hugely rewarding. At Home Instead clients and caregivers are matched so we share common areas of interest and each caregiver has their own set of clients, meaning that we see them on a regular basis. That is why working for Home Instead is so fantastic; because I get the opportunity to build real relationships and friendships with those that I visit.”
Janice is keen to recommend a career in care. She says that the role requires a lot of patience and understanding as well as an empathetic nature but she finds it thoroughly rewarding and says she couldn’t ask for more when it comes to job satisfaction.
Steve and Jan Gapper are keen to promote careers in care. Commenting, Jan said: “Much work is being done at present to modernise adult social care by ensuring that qualifications and standards continually adapt to meet the changing needs of people who use care services. Pair this with the massive increase in the amount of care being delivered, particularly care of older people, and you have a sector which is booming and which offers great career opportunities.
“I think there is a perception out there that caring doesn’t offer career progression opportunities which simply isn’t the case. The sector now also offers great training opportunities with care staff working towards NVQ level 2 and even as far as level 5 qualifications, depending on their chosen career path.
“Janice is a great example of the training and support we give to our staff - she is about to start working towards NVQ level 5 at Peter Symons College.”
Home Instead’s services are tailored to the needs of individual clients and range from companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, post-discharge care, personal care, medication reminders, shopping and errands. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
