John Atkins, who owns and runs the Walton-on-Thames office of at-home care company, Home Instead Senior Care and is also, on behalf of the Surrey Care Association, chair of Skills for Care’s Surrey sub-group looking at workforce development and social care, is urging local people to consider a career in care work.
Much work is being done at present to modernise adult social care by ensuring that qualifications and standards continually adapt to meet the changing needs of people who use care services. Pair this with the massive increase in the amount of care being delivered, particularly care of older people, and you have a sector which is booming and which offers great career opportunities.
Commenting, John said: “The benefits of the work we do with Skills for Care are twofold. Those receiving care are receiving a better service and people who work in the sector have much improved training and far greater scope for career development within social care.
“I think there is a perception out there that caring doesn’t offer career progression opportunities which simply isn’t the case. The sector offers great training opportunities with care staff working towards level 2 and even as far as level 5 qualifications, depending on their chosen career path. “
“Care workers can now move towards much more focused and role-specific professional development through the new Qualification and Credit Framework which offers highly flexible yet more manageable individual steps, geared both to the specific career ambitions of the individual and immediate needs of the employer.”
John continues: “In companies such as Home Instead there are real opportunities. For example, it isn’t uncommon for caregivers to progress to being a senior caregiver, weekend supervisor or even Care Manager where they become responsible for all the company’s caregivers. Some take jobs in the office such as scheduler or recruiter and trainer – the opportunities are there.
“I would urge anyone, young or old, who has a caring and compassionate nature to look into the opportunities which are out there in the care sector.”
